Saudi Arabia has submitted an official bid to host the Asian Winter games in 2029.

The kingdom wants to host the event at Trojena, a mountain destination in the country’s northwest, the Arab News reported.

The facility is is due to be completed in 2026 and will offer year-round outdoor skiing and adventure sports.

Should the bid succeed, it would be radical departure from hosting the event in nations more associated with winter sports such as Japan, South Korea and China.

The president of the Saudi Olympic and Paralympic Committee, Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki Al-Faisal was quoted as saying the bid “affirms the geographical, environmental diversity and natural wealth that the Kingdom enjoys and is willing to share with our wider Asian Olympic family”.

NEOM is an acronym for “New Future”- a planned $500 billion futuristic megacity expected to cover almost 26,000 sq km in northwestern Saudi Arabia abutting the Gulf of Aqaba.
